High-Precision Hardened Steel Strip
Burton, the world’s premier manufacturer of snowboards and gear,
formerly used three vendors to produce a shaped steel strip – a
critical board performance component. Lead times were longer
than ideal, and there were interim transports, large inventories
– and high unit costs.
Profiles developed a program to produce the entire hardened
steel strip in-house. Integrating several wire processing
techniques into a single production line, multiple product sizes
could be fabricated from a single inventory item by making small
adjustments in equipment set-up. A special finishing line was
developed and built which combined stamping, heat treating and
cut-off operations to further reduce handling and inventory.
With improved quality, shortened lead times and reduced cost,
Burton was able to respond to market demands with a level of
